Smart ecosystems are increasingly shaping our urban centers. They are underpinned by technology systems that are able to leverage data analytics to provide deep insights and innovative platforms for enhancing existing services and developing new ones to support customers. Smart cities initiatives underway in the region expect to integrate public and citizen services such those related to public safety, utilities, education, health and others, into seamless platforms that enhance citizen experience. Smart initiatives such as smart buildings and smart campuses leverage technology paradigms such as cloud, analytics, Internet of Things, and others to drive sustainability, safety and efficiency in the ecosystem.

The emergence of the Internet of Things is widely expected to transform our lives and businesses. The number of IP-ready devices that can communicate without human interaction over a network is increasing at an exponential rate. IDC predicts that the worldwide spending on the Internet of Things (IoT) will grow at a 17.0% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from $698.6 billion in 2015 to nearly $1.3 trillion in 2019. This phenomenon is creating opportunities for transformation in industries such as manufacturing, government, financial services, and retail, to name a few. Emerging use cases include automated public transit, smart buildings, remote health monitoring, digital signage, connected vehicles, smart appliances, and air traffic monitoring, among others.
